December 1st 2018 we present Not an Atlas at Carambolage in Basel.
This Is Not an Atlas gathers more than 40 counter-cartographies from all over the world. This collection shows how maps are created and transformed as a part of political struggle, for critical research or in art and education. This Is Not an Atlas seeks to inspire, to document the underrepresented, and to be a useful companion when becoming a counter-cartographer yourself. We want to present this global collection of counter-cartographies in a way that activists, academics, artists, counter-cartographers, editors and authors of This Is Not an Atlas can share their experiences in different ways.
Special Guest: Dr. Julia Mia Stirnemann
In her book „Über Projektionen: Weltkarten und Weltanschauungen“ Julia Mia gives insights in world maps and shows how their form of presentation are coined by historically specific weltanschauung. From reconstruction – unveiling paradigmatic conceptions of the world in the respective world maps – she goes to to deconstruction of these maps, to, finally, propose alternative cartographic representations of the world.
Julia Mia will present her book and discuss Not an Atlas with us.
Artist, activist and cartographers from Basel/Dreyeckland are invited to join and debate with us the potential of counter-cartography for their activity.
