The real world is nothing like that shown on maps. On maps the distance from here to there is always the same. In the real world it isn’t. On maps city blocks don’t change in size. In the real world they do. On maps north is always north. In the real world it’s sometimes south, sometimes east, west. The problem tackled by the cartography of reality is how to show this real world on paper, that is, how to make maps of the world people really live in. Because they sure don’t live in the one shown on most maps!
